Wires
Even with all the new wireless peripherals on the market today, you're still faced with an overabundance of cords and cables. This spaghetti tangle under your desk not only poses a personal safety issue, it also leaves components highly vulnerable to accidents. (Imagine the heartbreak and frustration of getting caught in a loose cord and sending your very expensive network server or external back-up drive smashing into tiny pieces on the floor.) The fix can be as simple as using string, tape or twist ties to wrap your cords into a neat little bundle.
You can also create a homemade "snake" out of flexible tubing that can be found in just about any home improvement or pool supply store. Talk to your company's Facilities Planner for suggestions and to find out the resources available.
Organization
While some folks thrive in the midst of chaos, the rest of us find it detrimental to our productivity and our overall state of mind. A clean desk helps to create a more relaxed atmosphere to work in. This, in turn, enhances productivity. Pens, pencils, markers, etc. can be gathered into a pencil cup on the desk. For added space, get an in-drawer caddy with a place to keep pens, pencils and other supplies such as paper clips neatly inside your top drawer where they can be easily reached.
Lighting
If you're lucky enough to have a cubicle or an office next to a window, take full advantage of the natural lighting that flows into the space. However, you will want to place your monitor in a position that doesn't reflect the glare of the sun or cause a silouhette, both of which can make it difficult to see your work. If you're not located near a window, adding a task light (either free-standing or installed underneath a shelf or binder bin) will ease eye strain and may even aleviate headaches that are sometimes caused by overhead fluorescent lighting.
Ergonomics
Proper lighting is only part of the overall ergonomic picture. Proper positioning of your monitor, your keyboard, even your body, can prevent fatigue and chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel. The link below offers tip on selecting the right components for your workstation:
